The Ballad of the Mermaid of Zennor

From a young age, growing up in Cornwall, I adeptly internalised the Cornish way of life. Since moving to the city, I have looked back on my childhood and began to question the traditions and values that I was raised on. I found the way individuals would subconsciously conform to the values of their communities fascinating and turned to folk wisdom for reasoning. ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ is a folk story set in the Cornish village of Zennor. The tale follows a choir boy named Mathew Trewella who falls in love with a mermaid from Zennor Cove. This tale is disected throughout this video essay to understand the intricate connection between communities and their lore.
